Botanical Name of Almond Tree: Prunus dulcis
Synonyms: Prunus amygdalus Batsch., Amygdalus communis L., Amygdalus dulcis Mill
About Almond: Almonds are nut fruits which are derived from Almond Trees. These trees are natives of Middle Eastern and South Eastern countries. The fruits from this tree in the form of Almonds are within a shell. One has to remove the outer shell in order to get to the fruit inside it. Almond Tree is not a very big tree and only grows till a height of around 4 to 10 meters. It bears fruits sometime after 5-6 years after being planted. The fruit matures in the autumn season 7-8 months after it bears flowers.
History of Almonds: The first historical evidence of Almond plantations were found in Mediterranean climate of Middle east region. The human civilizations at that time in this region spread these plantations along with Mediterranean into parts of Africa. Further from Africa these plantations found their way into southern Europe and eventually landed in United States (California to be more specific). First the almonds were considered to be the wild fruits but soon they were domesticated and started to be cultivated in a more organized manner.
Today United States of America produces almost half total world production of Almonds and California Almonds are famous all around the world. Spain, Syria and Italy follow America as other major producers of Almonds in the world.
Properties of Angelica Oil: Almond nuts contains close to 50% of oil. When we chew the almonds we can almost feel the juicy oil coming out of it. Major portion of the Almond oil constitutes of monounsaturated oleic acid (roughly around 62%). Balance is Linoleic acid (around 24%) and palmitic acid (around 6%).
