About Tea Tree: This shrub is native to Australia and belongs to Myrtaceae family. The leaves of this plant which are the primary source of its essential oil are linear and about 10 to 35 mm long. This plant bears white flowers which are 3 to 5 cm wide and small fruits which are about 2 to 3mm in diameter. This plant is well known for its therapeutic properties and essential oil extracted from it widely used in number of branded skincare and cosmetic commercial products available world over.

History of Tea Tree: The ancient history of Tea Tree is associated with its native land in Australia where the crushed leaves of this shrub were used to in treatment of common cold and cough.  It was later in early twentieth century that scientists were able to establish the antimicrobial properties of this plant and the oil extracted from it. Tea Tree essential oil was found to have natural anti microbial properties which were 11 times more powerful than what were found in phenol. It was soon after this discovery that there was huge commercial demand for this essential oil. Around Second World War the demand for this oil was known to have declines because more powerful antibiotics were available in the markets by then. Later in 1970s and 1980s again there was a increase in its demand as general interest in using natural products was reborn.

Properties of Tea Tree Oil: This essential Oil is extracted from leaves, and twigs of ‘Melaleuca alternifolia’ plant through steam distillation process. The major chemical constituents of Tea Tree essential oil includes: alpha pinene, beta pinene, sabinene, myrcene, limonene, linalool, terpinen-4-ol, alpha phellandrene,  alpha terpinene, 1,8 cineole, etc.
