Neem Oil

Botanical Name of Neem:  Azadirachta indica

Synonyms:  neem, arya veppu, Azad dirakht, Indian Lilac, Paraiso

About Neem: Neem is a fast grow tree found mostly in tropics which can attain height of 20 meters. It is an evergreen tree but in draught like conditions it can shed its leaves to survive. The dark green coloured leaves of this tree are about 40 centimetres long and bear white and fragrant flowers. The fruit of this tree is smooth and oval in its shape. It is covered by a green skin and is white inside with bitter-sweet pulp. The ‘neem’ tree very closely resembles ‘Chinaberry’, though later is an extremely poisonous tree. Sub arid and sub-humid conditions with an annual rainfall between 400- 1200mm are ideal habitat for a Neem tree.

History of Neem: Neem tree has a special significance in the Indian subcontinent for thousands of years due to it medicinal properties. Almost the entire tree including it, bark, branches, leaves, fruits can be used for some or the other benefit. Neem is known to be originated in the ‘Assam’ state of North East India bordering Myanmar. Gradually it spread to the dry lands of entire sub continental regions. The word Neem is derived from a word in Sanskrit language known ‘nimba’, which means ‘cure for all’. Such are the properties of Neem that since ancient times it was considered to be cure of all ailments. Neem and its benefits are mentioned in many ancient Indian scriptures and also have been traditionally used here to cure many different ailments. Even in today’s modern world products with neem or neem oil as its active ingredient remain very popular.

Properties of Neem Oil: The colour of Neem Oil can vary from light to dark brown depending upon the time of harvest and has a strong and bitter odour. Neem Oil is usually extracted by cold pressing the need seeds. Sometimes solvent extraction method is also used to obtain neem oil but it is not of the same high quality as obtained by cold pressing.  Neem oil has large quantities of triglycerides and triterpenoids, few important chemical constituents of neem oil include: Oleic acid, stearic acid, palmitic acid, Linoleic acid, campesterol, stigmasterol, beta sitosterol, etc.
