Synonyms: Laung, đinh hương, cengkeh, Eugenia aromatica (L.) Baill., Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb., Eugenia caryophyllus (Spreng.) 

About Clove: Cloves basically are dried flower buds of tree known as Syzygium aromaticum and are popularly used in cooking all over the world. The Clove tree is an evergreen Tree which on an average grows up to 10 meters in height. The flower buds of this tree are pale green in colour and turn into bright red when they are ripe and ready for collection. Size of clove is between 1.5 cms. to 2 cms in length and has four unopened petals on the top which form a small ball.

History of Clove: Historically cultivation of clove was only restricted to few Islands which were referred as ‘spice islands’. Spice Islands were a group of five islands namely Bacan, Makian, Moti, Ternate and Tidore. From these Islands the cloves moved towards Middle East and Europe. In Syria ceramic vessels have been found with cloves that date way back to 1721 BC.

Clove was historically traded by the sailors of Middle East in the Indian Ocean, this fact was highlighted by the famous Persian sailor Ibn Battuta. The Famous stories of Sinbad the sailor also mentions of one of the character who was primarily involved in trading of cloves. Around second half of 15th century the Portuguese took over most of clove trading in Indian Ocean and brought large quantities of cloves to Europe.

Properties of Clove Oil: One of the most important chemical constituent of clove Oil which makes if so unique is Eugenol. Clove essential Oil constitutes almost 72 to 90 percentage of Eugenol. The aroma on clove oil which we smell is primarily that of Eugenol. Apart from Eugenol following chemical constituents are also present in Clove essential Oil: acetyl eugenol, beta caryophyllene, crategolic acid, , methyl salicylate, stigmasterol, campesterol, sesquiterpenes, etc.
