Synonyms: F. officinale, F. capillaceum and Anethum foeniculum, sweet fennel

About Fennel Seed: Fennel is an herb which has a spicy smell very similar to that of aniseed and is best known for its digestive properties. This highly aromatic plant bears yellow flowers and is grown in many different parts of the world though it is a native to Mediterranean region. The major countries where fennel is cultivated today include: India, Mexico, Iran, Bulgaria, Syria, Morocco, Egypt, Canada and Afghanistan. The average height of a fennel plant is about 2.5 meters and seeds are 4 to 10 mm long.

History of Fennel Seed: One of the oldest historical records mentioning fennel seeds date way back to AD 23 when it was believed that serpants ate rubbed fennel to improve their eyesight.  Account books of Kinf Edward I of England also mentions about buying fennel seeds in year 1281. During medieval times it was strongly believed that if you would hang fennel seeds on your door the evil spirits would stay away from your house. During the same time fennel seeds were given to wet nurses to increase their milk supply. Fennel seeds were used in tea and believed it would keep the weight in control.

Properties of Fennel Seed Oil: Steam distillation of sweet fennel seeds gives a yield of 2 to 4% of fennel seed essential oil. The important chemical constituents of this oil include: alpha pinene, mrycene, fenchone, trans-anethole, methyl chavicol, limonene, cineole, anisic aldehyde, etc.
