Botanical Name of Hazelnut:  Corylus avellana

Synonyms: cob nut or filbert nut

About Hazelnut: Hazel nuts are 10 to 15 mm in diameter and 15 to 25 mm in length. It takes around 7 to 8 months after pollination for these nuts to ripe and become useful for us. A hazel nut tree grows about 20 feet in height and produce 20-25 pounds of nut every year.  Initially these nuts are green in colour but later ripe to chocolate brown colour. This nut has a thick brown outer skin which may or may not be removed before cooking it. Most of the usage of these nuts is in confectionery (chocolates and chocolate truffles) industry.  They are a rich source of proteins and saturated fats.

History of Hazelnut: The modern day Hazel nuts once was called Filbert nut. The name filbert was with reference to the Saint Philbert’s Day (22nd August), when the harvesting of the nuts began. It is believed that these nuts originated in Damascus where they grew as wild fruits in forests. Some fossilized remains in Syria have dated hazel nuts to some 5000 years back. First commercial activity of hazel nuts in America was recorded in early 18th century by Robert Prince. Robert Prince imported these trees from Europe and planted them in America.

Properties of Hazelnut Oil: This essential oil is highly penetrative and has a slight nutty aroma. The chief chemical constituents of hazelnut oil include: Palmitic acid, Palmitoleic acid, stearic acid, Oleic acid, Linoleic acid. Linolenic acid, Arachidic, Gadoleic, Behenic, Vitamin E, etc.
