About Honeysuckle: Honeysuckle as it is popular called is a plant which ranges from being a shrub to a vine. T   ere are close to 180 species of Lonicera which include both deciduous and evergreen varieties. Though the height of this plant varies depending upon the variety but as an average it would range between 1 to 3 feet. This plant has very uniquely shaped flowers that resemble a trumpet. These flowers usually bloom in early spring or late winter and carry on till summers. The colour of these flowers also vary depending on the species of Lonicera, it may vary from yellow, white, red or rose. Honeysuckles are ornamental plants which have many therapeutic properties.

History of Honeysuckle: Among more than 180 varieties of this plant two are more popular; these include Japanese Honeysuckle and Tartarian Honeysuckle. Traditionally Japanese variety has been found in Japan and parts of China from where it was made popular and introduced to rest of the world in late 19th century. Ancient Chinese used honeysuckle to treat snakebites and during medivieal period more of its therapeutic properties were discovered.  On the otherhand, Tartarian variety also came into prominence and it had originated from Russia. In United States today Tartarian Honeysuckle is very popular and cultivated in the large farmlands.

Properties of Honeysuckle: Flowers of honeysuckle plant are used to extract its essential oil through steam distillation process. The major chemical constituents include: calcium, inositol, linoleic acid, elaidic acid, HCN, Lonicerin, magnesium, myristic acid, luteolin, tannin, postassium, zinc, etc.
