About Juniper Berry: Juniper is an evergreen herb and can attain height of up to 30 feet’s when grown in wild surroundings. The cultivated version of Jupiter plant can only grow up to less than the half of its wild version. Juniper Berry is referred to the female seed cones of this plant and these are roughly about 4 to 25mm in length. A berry to get mature it may take anything between 6 to 18 months after pollination. Juniper berries are popularly used as a spice and finds it major use in cooking.

History of Juniper Berry: Greeks are known to be among the oldest users of Juniper berries and they used it primarily it as a medicine before using it in cooking. Juniper berries were first discovered in the Tombs in Egypt but there is no history of these being grown there. So it is widely believed that the Egyptians would have imported them from Greece. Greeks also believed that the consumption of these berries would increase the stamina and therefore use to give it to their athletes participating in Olympics. There has also been a history of Greeks using these berries as local substitute of expensive black pepper which they imported from India. One of the most popular uses of Juniper has been to flavour Gin. Dutch called juniper as ‘genever’ and hence the name Gin was derived from this Dutch word.

Properties of Juniper Berry Oil: The Juniper essential oil can be obtained from twigs, needles and berries of ‘juniperus communis’ but the one distilled through the berries is considered to be the best. The major chemical constituents of Juniper Berry Oil include: alpha pinene, beta pinene, camphene, sabinene, myrcene, alpha terpinene, y terpinene, 1,4 cineole, beta phellandrene, p-cymene, camphor, linalool, linayl acetate etc.
