About Melissa: Melissa is a perennial herb from mint family which grows up to 150 cm tall. Its leaves a lemon scented and it bears small white coloured flowers during summers. These flowers are full of nectar and become major attraction for honey bees. Even the name ‘Melissa’ means ‘honey bee’ in Greek. Melissa needs warm and light climate to grow where the temperature is at least 20 degrees Celsius. In winters this plant dies but again becomes lively with spring season. It is also a good plant to have indoors. If left alone it can be a nuisance for your garden as it will seed itself prolifically.  

History of Melissa: the history of lemon balm would take us 2000 years back, since when it was being used as a traditional medicine form to treat many ailments including: fever, cold, spasms, digestive disorders, etc. In medieval times the tea with Melissa was known to be a blessing for treating disorders related to nervous system. It was also a popular remedy to treat insomnia in olden days. By the 17th century AD the usefulness of Melissa was well established and it was being used for many different applications all across the European continent.

Properties of Melissa Oil: Fresh, dried leaves and flowering tops of Melissa plants are used to extract its essential oil through steam distillation process. The average yield of marjoram essential oil is around 0.01 to 0.02%. The major chemical constituents in this oil include: trans ocimene, cis 3 hexanol, linalool, citronellal, copaene, neral, caryophellene, methyl hepenone, geraniol, etc.
