Sage Oil

About Sage: Common Sage is an evergreen perennial plant with grey-green leaves and beautiful purple coloured flowers. It is common garden plant and is grown in the backyards today for its ornamental value but traditionally it is known for its culinary use and therapeutic properties. The average height of a Sage plant is roughly about one meter and it bears flowers in spring or summer season. There a number of varieties of this plant but the two which are quite common and popular include red sage and the purple sage.

History of Sage: This plant is native to the Mediterranean region but is grown in most parts of the world today.  Since ancient days humans had realized benefits of this plant and used it to treat snake bites and women’s fertility related problems. It was also widely considered and used to keep evil away. It was the Romans who took this plant back home and later introduced it to rest of the Europe as a medicinal herb. This plant was of high importance in medieval times and many instances of this could be found. It was also used in the popular blend (Four thieves Vinegar) which was used to ward of plague.

Properties of Sage Oil: Dried leaves of Salvia Officinalis are steam distilled to extract Sage essential oil. The major chemical constituents of this oil include: alpha pinene, beta pinene, linalool, camphor, limonene, camphene, myrcene, 1,8 cineole, alpha thujone, beta thujone, borneol, bornyl acetate, etc.
