About Spikenard: Spikenard is a flowering plant which grows on the slopes of Himalayas in China, Nepal and India. This plant only grows at an altitude of about 3000 to 5000 meters above seas level. It can grow up to 1 meter in height and bears pink flowers. Rhizomes of spikenard are used to extract its aromatic essential oil from them which is known to have many therapeutic properties.

History of Spikenard: Spikenard oil has been known and used for medicinal values for thousands of years in the Indian sub continent. Ancient medicine form of Ayurveda used this essential oil to cure number of ailments. In ancient Egypt this oil was considered to be a luxury and used to kings and lords. Romans used this oil to make many different popular perfumes out of it. This oil is known to have special significance at the temple service in Jerusalem. There have been various historical literatures available which mention use of this oil (including the Holy Bible) for many different applications in different ears.

Properties of Spikenard Oil: This essential Oil is extracted from the Rhizome of Spikenard plant. Rhizome is basically the stem of the plant which remains underground. Crushes and dried rhizomes are steam distilled to obtain this oil. The yield of this oil ranges between 1 to 3 percent. The major chemical constituents of Spikenard essential oil include: jonon, 1,8 cineole, bornyl acetate, valeranone, tetramenthyloxatricylodecanol, methylthymyl ether, etc.
