Botanical Name of Thyme:  Thymus vulgaris

Synonyms:  Thymus aestivus, T. ilerdensis and T. velantianus

About Thyme: This plant is a native to Europe and is mainly cultivated as a culinary herb. This plant is a short shrub and grows between 15 to 20 cm tall.  As per a popular belief in Europe this plant prevents nightmares and if one drinks Thyme Tea he or she would see fairies in their dreams. This plant is commonly called Red Thyme and is commercially cultivated to cater to its demand of an herb and for requirement for its essential oil. Thyme is known to have many therapeutic properties.

History of Thyme: The grey aromatic leaves of Thyme have been traditionally used by Greeks, Egyptians and Romans in their ancient medicines. This plant bears white or pale purple colour flowers which when dried become source for extracting its essential oil. The word Thyme is derived from a Greek word ‘Thymus’ which means ‘perfume’. The ancient Greeks used this product as incense in their temples.  During medieval times this herb was also used to keep epidemics and diseases at a distance and hence used to be placed at public places.

Properties of Thyme Oil: Freshly dried flower tops and leaves of Thyme are used to extract essential oil from it through process of steam distillation. The yield of this oil ranger between 0.7% to 1.0%. The main chemical constituents of this essential oil include: alpha pinene, beta pinene, alpha thujone, camphene, para cymene, alpha terpinene, borneol, thymol, carvacrol, linalool, etc.
